Pepperl+Fuchs introduces the G10 safety module – the world’s smallest AS-Interface safety module with IP67 protection. Applying a strict “less is better” design philosophy, G10 safety modules are a Safety at Work solution that reduces the complexity and cost of any safety installation. Additionally, the design supports high modularity enabling OEMs to transform any conventional safety device into an AS-Interface networking solution, thus further reducing inventory requirements and simplifying machine designs.
“AS-Interface Safety at Work is the premiere technology for combining conventional and safety I/O devices on a single network, and the new G10 safety module significantly expands the Safety at Work capabilities,” remarks Helge Hornis, manager of intelligent systems at Pepperl+Fuchs. “In fact machine builders searching for ways to simplify their safety installation should give this technology and the G10 safety module a good look, as OEMs who have implemented this solution can reduce wiring requirements up to 90 percent.”
The ultra-compact G10 modules feature a single-piece design that delivers unobtrusive simplicity and superior long-term reliability when compared with complex multi-part safety module designs. With innovative Connect & Done technology the ultra-compact 40 mm x 27 mm x 22mm housing can be placed directly inside a cable tray, eliminating mounting requirements in many applications.
With its Connect & Done technology, adding safety devices to any setup using the G10 safety module takes only minutes. And it is irrelevant if magnetic door switches, e-stops or key operated door switches are necessary.
“A single two-conductor AS-Interface flat cable can hold up to 31 dry-contact safety devices of any kind. Now, safety data is directly passed on to a conventional PLC where detailed diagnostics can take place,” explains Hornis. “Because all safe operations are handled through Safety at Work costly safety PLCs are never needed, further reducing the cost of the system. And while safety PLCs are justifiable in some cases, the added cost is too much for small to medium size installations.”
“With over 20 years involvement in AS-Interface, Pepperl+Fuchs is passionate when it comes to developing exceptional products. Our engineers draw from a wealth of innovative design ideas like the robust, single-piece G10 housing with its unique pivot-top design, the highest grade gold plated piercing needles, and best-in-class electronic designs. As a result, the G10 safety module is innovative like no other Safety at Work module on the market,” says Hornis.

Pepperl+Fuchs introduces three new G11 Series AS-Interface I/O Modules. The first two modules offer two analog outputs each; one for 0-20 mA operation for flat cable connectivity and one for 0-20 mA operation with an M12 round connector. The third module offers four analog outputs of either 0-20 mA or 0-10 V for flat cable connectivity that can be powered by AS-Interface or an auxiliary power source. The output type of each module can be selected by DIP switch or automatically determined based on the connected load.
“The G11 Series are simply some of the best designed AS-Interface modules available in the marketplace. Their simple, round housing design enables the AS-Interface cable to easily exit the housing in any direction to significantly simplify installation and operation. The round design also leverages an O-ring gasket to make these modules impervious to water jets or submersion,” says Tim Cicerchi, Product Manager, Pepperl+Fuchs.
These Ecolab, clean-design certified modules not only deliver reliable operation – they help improve productivity by delivering the fastest analog to digital conversion available today. These modules also provide lead break detection and integrated shield connection in the M12 connector and on the base to maximize reliability. A gasket keeps dirt and water from collecting between the base and the top of the unit. Stainless steel mounting hardware helps to ensure reliable installation.
With its unique yellow flat cable, AS-Interface supplies power to sensors and actuators, and enables users to transfer data to up to 31 analog nodes per AS-Interface network. Retrofitting AS-Interface is extremely simple, and the installation time and costs are much lower compared to conventional wiring technology. AS-Interface transfers data reliably, is extremely resistant to electromagnetic interference, has a diagnostic function and can detect faults such as short circuits.

Phoenix Contact has introduced several new versions of the FL mGuard industrial security devices. With upgraded hardware and advanced configuration options, the mGuard RS2000 and RS4000 can provide defense-in-depth cyber security in more critical applications.
Like the original mGuard products, some of which were discontinued earlier this year, the RS2000 and the RS4000 variants feature all-in-one firewall, virtual private network (VPN) and routing capability. Thanks to the new metal housing, the new mGuards can operate between -20 and +60 degrees Celsius, compared with 0 to 55 degrees Celsius for the original RS variants. The RS4000 is currently awaiting UL Class I, Div. 2 approval, which will make it suitable for demanding environments, such as the oil and gas industry.
The integrated SD card reader makes managing configurations much easier. Users can save a configuration on an SD card inserted in one mGuard. Then, if they want to use the same settings on another mGuard device, they can insert that card into a new mGuard. Once the mGuard has been configured with an SD card, the settings will remain, even if the SD card is removed, until reconfigured.
The RS2000 is a basic model with a limited firewall (“accept all” or “drop all” options for incoming and outgoing traffic). The full-featured RS4000 has sophisticated security capabilities including CIFS Integrity Monitoring, a full stateful inspection firewall and a user-based firewall, as well as redundancy options and other advanced features.
The RS4000 VPN and RS4000 can both be upgraded to 250 tunnels via a separately sold license. The RS2000 can support two tunnels. All of the new mGuard products have 24 V output and LED illumination on VPN activation.

Valve-regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries have been the standard battery chemistry for battery back-up systems for years. They have been proven to be a reliable solution for industrial applications. However, they have a crippling limitation: temperature. Most VRLA batteries commonly used have an operational temperature range of -0 to 40 C before experiencing severe derating and operational issues.
This is one of the reasons Phoenix Contact has introduced capacitor-based energy storage. This battery has a wider operational temperature range of -20 to 60 C, allowing battery back-up solutions to be placed in more harsh environments without having to worry about frequent replacements of the battery.
The capacitor technology also allows a back-up system to have a longer operational lifespan before the user has to replace the batteries. This capacitor-based energy storage has an operational life of up to 20 years based upon the ambient conditions – nearly ten times that of the standard VRLA battery.
When used with the QUINT UPS-IQ family of products, users can gain additional visibility into the performance behavior of the capacitors such as:
- State of Charge (SOC): Indicates the remaining backup time and level of charge on the battery. Customers will be able to see the amount of available time left at a quick glance.
- State of Health (SOH): Indicates the remaining service life of the battery module(s). The history of the battery module(s) is recorded and an indication is provided of when the battery needs to be replaced before it becomes a concern.
- State of Function (SOF): Indicates the capacity of the battery module(s). The available capacity of the battery is provided giving indication as to how well the battery is accepting the charge and if the full capacity is still available.
