Red Lion Panel Meters Chosen #1 for Eighth Straight Year

The readers of Control Design magazine have again selected Red Lion as their number one choice in panel meters for the eighth consecutive year. Red Lion has won the panel meter category of the Reader's Choice Award every year since 2001, the first year the award was given. The meters won by a resounding margin, receiving more than twice as many votes as the closest competition.

The balloting for this survey went to machine builders and systems integrators who reported to Control Design that they had the authority to specify, recommend, or purchase industrial automation and control products for industrial machines. Vendors were not included in the balloting, and any known responses from vendors were not counted. The voting was completely un-aided, therefore no lists of vendors or product brands were provided. Readers were simply asked which was the one best company for products in the panel meter category.

In addition to the panel meter category, Red Lion also received recognition in the loop controller category and was voted as having very good to excellent service and support.

New Products from Tyco Electronics

New Additions to the HTS Connector Family

For over 50 years, the HTS connector family has met the most rigorous environmental and technical requirements. Traditionally used in industrial and railway applications due to their excellent electrical and mechanical features, these robust products have migrated to other demanding applications such as traffic management, white goods, wind energy, solar and lighting.

This heavy duty connector system is a highly modular system of inserts and shells that allow designers to configure an interconnection to meet specific application needs. The wide range of selections allows EMI shielding, various levels of sealing, different latching mechanisms and cable entries — in essence, the ability to construct a connector custom-tailored to the application.

Recently Tyco Electronics has significantly expanded the HTS connector product portfolio with several new product families.

High Variable System is Very Flexible
One of the key new products is the HVS modular system. This high variable system offers a choice of more than 25 different connector modules that can be quickly and easily mounted to or dismounted from a metal frame without tooling. Up to six single modules or three double modules can be used within a single shell.

Interface modules include high-voltage contacts (up to 3000 V nominal), high-current contacts (up to 250 A) and high-density signal contacts (up to 25 contacts in a single module). Coaxial contacts, RJ-45 modular plugs, USB and IEEE1394 (FireWire) contacts are offered within the HVS system. Other available modules support Quadrax contacts for operation to 1 GHz, subminiature-D interfaces and also pneumatic connections.

The populated HVS connector systems can be used in a broad range of heavy duty connector enclosures.

Plastic Connectors Expand Range
The availability of plastic HTS connectors is another recent development. Traditionally, only metal housings were available in this family. A growing range of HG-Q series plastic connectors has been developed for industrial machinery, motor drives and other industrial applications. These highly reliable and cost-effective connectors are offered in standard and EMV shielded versions.

HG-Q.4/2, HG-Q.8 and HG-Q.10 series connectors are designed for operation from -40ºC to +125ºC. They conform with Desina and ISO 23570-3.4 standards and meet IP65 protection class specifications in their locked positions. A variety of accessories are available for use with these robust connectors.

HG-Q.10 motor connector housings are specifically designed for direct mounting on motors. HG-Q.4/2 and HG-Q.8 connectors are available with straight and right-angled hoods and cable-to-cable coupler housings.

Combination Inserts
Another recent addition is the HMX hybrid insert. These inserts combine power and signal interface within one insert. Space-saving HMX inserts require 30 percent less space than traditional inserts. They permit reductions in cost and component count, as they require no frames. HMX inserts are designed for use with the broad array of HTS hoods and housings and find application in many instances where both signal and power connections are required.

Fully Shrouded Headers Help Eliminate Mismating

New fully shrouded post headers, available in 2 through 12 positions, have been added to the popular Economy Power (EP) connector family. Intended for secondary power circuit applications, the through-hole headers have a current-carrying capacity of 7.5 A maximum per contact. To lessen the chance of mismating, the full four-sided shroud aids proper alignment during engagement of the plug connector. The new headers are compatible with existing EP connectors.

Contacts are on a 0.156-inch [3.96-mm] pitch. The header includes a positive-lock feature. During mating, the positive locking lever on the outside of the plug housing engages the mating header housing to provide greater retention. Housings are 94V-0-rated nylon; contacts are tin-plated brass. The connectors are UL Component Recognized, CSA Certified, and RoHS compliant.

Turck Dual Axis MEMS Inclinometer Sensor for Detecting Angular Tilt

TURCK introduces a new dual axis inclinometer sensor for angular tilt detection. These sensors feature compact rectangular housings, and may be mounted at ±10, ±45, ±60 and ±85 degree angles. Inclinometer sensors may be used in a wide variety of industries to solve unique feedback requirements where your application requires a need to level platforms, control tilt angle or control a dancer.

The new TURCK inclinometer measures angular tilt in reference to gravity. At the heart of the TURCK inclinometer is a MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system) device that incorporates a micro-electro-mechanical capacitive element into the sensor that utilizes two parallel plate electrodes, one stationary and one attached to a spring-mass system. Movement causes acceleration that produces deflection in the non-stationary electrode. This results in a measurable change in the capacitance between the two plates that is proportional to the angle of deflection. These signals are conditioned to provide two analog outputs (0.1 to 4.9 VDC) or two current outputs (4 to 20 mA).

The micro board design in the MEMS technology allows for a compact, precise inclinometer in a very robust, industrialized package. The inclinometer is IP 67 rated, with a temperature range of -30 to 70 C that permits its use in many applications, including:

  • Machine engineering: levers, pedals, flaps, mixing machines, hydraulic jacks
  • Commercial machines: diggers, cranes, rotary tables, bulldozers, road construction machinery
  • Vertical and horizontal drills used in tunnel and road construction and immersion equipment
