Turck Single Axis 360-Degree MEMS Inclinometer Sensor

TURCK introduces a new single axis inclinometer sensor for angular tilt detection with an adjustable measuring range of 360 degrees. Inclinometer sensors may be used in a wide variety of industries to solve unique feedback requirements where the customer needs to level platforms, control tilt angle or control a dancer.

The new TURCK inclinometer measures angular tilt in reference to gravity. At the heart of the TURCK inclinometer is a MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system) device that incorporates a micro-electromechanical capacitive element into the sensor that utilizes two parallel plate electrodes, one stationary and one attached to a spring-mass system. Movement causes acceleration that produces deflection in the non-stationary electrode. This results in a measurable change in the capacitance between the two plates that is proportional to the angle of deflection. These signals are conditioned to provide a single analog voltage output (0.1 to 4.9 VDC) or current output (4 to 20 mA).

The micro board design in the MEMS technology allows for a compact, precise inclinometer in a very robust, industrialized package. The inclinometer is IP68 rated, with a temperature range of -30 to 70 °C.

Pepperl+Fuchs VDM28 Distance Measurement Sensors

Pepperl+Fuchs introduces VDM28 Distance Measurement Sensors with Pulse Ranging Technology (PRT). These cost-effective sensors provide distance measurements from 200 mm up to 8 m with repeatable accuracy of less than 5 mm, with resolution of 1 mm and response time as fast as 10 ms, regardless of target surface. Pulse Ranging Technology is an advanced method of distance measurement that provides more precise measurement than phase correlation and time-of-flight techniques.

At just 88 mm x 26 mm x 54 mm, VDM28 Distance Measurement Sensors are the industry’s most compact PRT-based sensors. They feature a visible red laser light source with a small, well defined light spot for quick, accurate alignment. These sensors offer a simple one-touch “teach” process, are immune to cross-talk and provide reliable operation in temperatures ranging from -22°F up to 122°F. They operate at 10-30 VDC with maximum load current of 100 mA, and feature two 4-in-1 discrete outputs. Available options include a 4-20 mA analog output, as well as an IO-Link of Com 2 interface.

“Unlike phase correlation methodology that has limited range and is relatively dependent on good, stable environmental conditions for accurate and repeatable measurements, Pulse Ranging Technology can provide highly reliable and repeatable distance measurements to over 3200 feet with little concern for ambient environmental conditions,” says Gary Frigyes, Product Manager.

With PRT, short pulses of light are emitted from the sensor, reflected off the target and received back to the sensor. This procedure is repeated up to 250,000 times per second. The power of a single pulse is up to one thousand times more intense than the pulses generated by sensors that emit permanent light beams. As a result, PRT-based sensors deliver far more accurate, reliable and repeatable results irrespective of target surface or color, or high ambient light.

VDM28 sensors feature the same housing as Pepperl+Fuchs popular, time tested and field proven Series 28 family of photoelectric sensors for familiarity of use, and installation compatibility with other industry standard sensors. They are ideally suited for use in applications where standard background suppression sensors reach their maximum range, or where a long range sensor with a small light spot is required. Potential application examples include:

  • Vehicle positioning
  • Collision avoidance and/or proper separation of overhead conveyors and cranes
  • Verification and fine positioning of racks in high bay warehouses
  • Stack height monitoring
  • Object identification or classification
  • Measuring coil thickness
  • Distance measurement for monorails
  • People detection and monitoring
  • Level monitoring
  • Fork height monitoring

Schneider Electric Magelis STO and STU HMIs

The new Magelis STO and Magelis STU HMIs are the first small panel HMIs on the market to address the needs of application builders who are price sensitive, but still desire some advanced functionality atypical for a small panel HMI such as data logging, USB port application download and remote Web access.

“When machine builders are looking for basic HMIs, it’s easy for them to become fixated on the lowest price,” said Jacob Kimball, HMI product manager, Schneider Electric. “However, this can end up costing users in the long run if they don’t consider the total cost of working with a low-cost HMI vendor, the product’s scalability for future needs and the lost opportunity cost of value-added features, for example integrated automation control protocols & ports, ease of use for the configuration software, remote access & E-mail, technical support, data storage & management and reliability.”

The Magelis STO HMI is one of the smallest touch screen operator panel on the market. With a 3.4” widescreen, it offers a resolution of 200 x 80 pixels and two versions of a monochrome screen. The screens are either green/orange/red backlight or white/pink/red backlight, which are designed to be visible to the operator at a distance. Superb graphics gives the operator an attractive and improved visualization of the application. The STO HMI also features serial, mini-USB and USB type A ports. Thanks to its low-consumption idle mode, the STO will contribute to the energy efficiency of your application.

The Magelis STU has the capability to send email and offers access via the Internet with embedded Web pages. The STU offers serial port and Ethernet connectivity and a 3.5” full-color graphical touch screen terminal with QVGA and TFT 65,536 colors. In addition, the STU offers patented 22mm pushbutton hole mounting, greatly reducing installation time. There simply is no other HMI product like it.
