Honeywell Sensing and Control ASDX Ultra-Low Pressure Sensors

Honeywell Sensing and Control has announced an upgrade to the ASDX Series that includes the following ultra-low pressure ranges:
  • 0 to 10 inches of H2O gage
  • ± 10 inches of H2O differential
  • ± 5 inches of H2O differential
As with the 1 and 5 psi low pressure sensors, the ASDX Series ultra-low pressure sensors incorporate ASIC technology for faster response, an SPI digital output option, and a 3.3 V power supply.

The ASDX Series is designed to provide digital correction of sensor offset, sensitivity, temperature coefficients, and non-linearity. These sensors are intended for use with non-corrosive, non-ionic working fluids such as air and dry gases.

The ASDX Series’ footprint is slightly larger than the SDX, but includes additional signal conditioning integrated within the product. This allows the customer to remove the components associated with signal conditioning from their PC board to free space and reduce costs normally associated with those components (e.g., acquisition, inventory, assembly). Having this capability within the sensor also eliminates many potential problems that could arise from having multiple components for signal conditioning spread across a circuit board.

The ASDX Series are available in analog or digital output:

Compensated analog output: Provides a ratiometric 12-bit analog output for reading pressure over the specified full scale pressure span and temperature range, allowing for fast and easy integration into standard electronic circuits.

Compensated 14-bit digital output: Provides either an I2C or SPI digital interface for reading pressure over the specified full scale pressure span and temperature range, minimizing connections and providing higher resolution and faster performance through reduced conversion requirements and the convenience of direct interface to the microprocessors or microcontrollers.

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS
  • Barometry
  • Flow calibrators
  • Gas flow instrumentation
  • Sleep apnea equipment
  • Pneumatic controls
  • Ventilation/air flow monitors

Honeywell Sensing and Control SS340RT and SS440R Digital Position Sensors

As unipolar devices, they are designed to respond to a single pole. These devices enhance our existing unipolar Hall-effect sensor portfolio by offering the following:
  1. Subminiature SOT-23 surface mount package
  2. Reverse polarity protection
  3. Low 3 V capability
  4. Price competitive

SS340RT Series: Subminiature SOT-23 surface mount package takes up less space on the printed circuit board; supplied on tape and reel for automated pick and place assembly, often helping to reduce manufacturing costs; responds to North pole.

SS440R Series: Leaded flat TO-92 style package (bulk packaging, 1000 units per bag). Future options will include ammopack (fan-fold) type tape, with straight or formed leads for automated assembly; responds to South pole.

These sensors are:

Price competitive: Honeywell has optimized the size of the integrated circuit, saving on manufacturing costs while still meeting customer requirements; these savings result in lower costs to customers

Economical: Package is supplied on tape and reel (SS340RT Series), often allowing for automated, lower-cost pick and place assembly which helps the customer reduce manufacturing costs; low voltage 3 V capability helps reduce power consumption

Small: Small footprint takes up less space on the PC board, typically allowing for more components on the same board

Flexible: Sinking output with open collector allows the sensor to interface with many electrical circuits without buffering; 3 to 24 Vdc supply voltages up to 125°C [257°F] and 3 to 12 Vdc voltage operating at 150 °C [257 °F] enhance application flexibility

Stable: Thermally balanced integrated circuit provides stable operation over a full temperature range

Safe: Built-in reverse polarity protection provides enhanced circuit protection

The new Hall-effect sensors are supplied in three different magnetic sensitivities:
  • Highest sensitivity: SS341RT and SS441R devices offer the highest sensitivity of the Series, with a typical operating point of 85 G at 25 °C [77 °F]
  • Medium sensitivity: SS343RT and SS443R offer medium sensitivity with 125 G typical at 25 °C [77 °F]

SMC Pneumatics Position Feedback Sensor for XRAY-S Gripper Series

Zaytran, SMC's partner in heavy-duty grippers, is now offering a position feedback sensor option for the XRAY-S gripper series. ZAYTRAN’s premier large format gripper, the XRAY-S, has very long strokes. The long strokes enable the XRAY-S to handle a wide variety of parts without having to change tooling. The ability to precisely monitor the jaw’s position greatly increases the gripper’s capabilities.

A short stroke gripper that would handle only one part typically would use two barrel proximity sensors to monitor when the gripper is “full open” and “closed on part.” Long stroke grippers, that handle many different parts, typically use multiple barrel proximity sensors to sense each individual part. It is not uncommon for an XRAY-S gripper to have as many as 6 sensors mounted on its side. This is not desirable for two reasons, cost and cable management. The XRAY-S is designed to operate in harsh environments, so the barrel proximity sensors have to be fully shielded which makes them expensive. Cable management is an issue since each prox. sensor has its own cable; multiple sensors mean multiple cables to route around a robot arm.

The new position feedback sensor for the XRAY-S solves both of the problems associated with the use of barrel proximity sensors. The cost of this package is typically less expensive than purchasing multiple proximity sensors. Since there is only one wire that extends from the sensor, cable management is not much of a concern. Additionally, the position feedback sensor is repeatable to ±0.0005 inches. This allows the XRAY-S-2200-PF to be used for part discrimination and stroke limitation (for quicker cycle times).

For new applications the position feedback sensor can be factory installed on new XRAY-S grippers. To retrofit an existing application there is a field installable kit. The position feedback sensor is available with either analog or digital outputs for application flexibility.

XRAY-S grippers are designed for use in harsh environments. The bearings are fitted with wipers and industrial scrapers. The pistons are hardened and fitted with welding scrapers and polymer wipers. The position feedback sensor is rated IP-67. This combined with lube-for-life helix technology assures years of trouble-free operation.

ZAYTRAN is a world leader in the design and manufacture of pneumatic grippers for harsh environments, large parts, class one clean rooms and locating devices for car body fabrication.

Pepperl+Fuchs SU18 and SU19 Plastic Fiber Optic Amplifiers

Pepperl+Fuchs introduces SU18 and SU19 Plastic Photoelectric Fiber Optic Amplifiers. These fiber optic amplifiers feature multiple detection modes, selectable timing functions, remote teach and Pepperl+Fuchs’ patented 4-in-1™ output. 4-in-1 output reduces costs and stock requirements by delivering NPN light on, NPN dark on, PNP light on, or PNP dark on, output options from a single sensor. They also feature a locking lever to secure the fiber optic cable to the sensor, along with a unique press-and-click feature that facilitates DIN rail mounting and removal without the need for any tools.

The SU18 series is available in pushbutton teach or potentiometer adjustable models. Pushbutton models feature multiple teach modes, while potentiometer models feature weak signal output with built-in diagnostic functions. Both SU18 models feature cross-talk protection when used in high resolution mode, with a large LED for sensor status display.

“The SU19 can be gang-mounted with up to 18 amplifiers, which can reduce wiring by up to 70% because expansion units have only one wire to connect. Unlike most competitive models where the bridge connector for gang-mounting is on the side of the sensor, the SU19's bridge connector is on the back of the sensor. This makes replacing middle amplifiers easy since adjacent amplifiers don't have to be removed as they do with side bridge connectors,” says Jeff Allison, Product Manager.

The high performance SU19 series also has a built-in illuminated 4-digit percentage-of-light-received display that is easier to interpret, and just as accurate, as conventional dual 4-digit display models. The SU19 has a glass detection mode that allows reliable detection of glass or transparent objects when used with thru-beam fiber optics.

The thin profile and features-set of both the SU18 and SU19 makes them an ideal sensing solution in space-restricted semiconductor and packaging applications such as IC detection, PCB/wafer detection, bottle counting and bottle cap detection, presence or absence of tablets in blister packs, registration mark detection on packaging film, counting IC pins, and gear teeth counting.

Banner Engineering Super High-Power QS30H2O Water Sensors

The QS30H2O product line was developed to detect the presence of water and water-based liquids. The typical application is verifying liquid fill on bottling lines and packaging machines. The sensors can also be used to verify water flow at a nozzle, or detect liquid level in a sight glass.

New higher output emitters have been specified in the super high-power models which allow the maximum sensor gain to be increased by a factor of 10. This extra burn-through power will enable the detection of liquid contents in thicker containers.

The sensor combines very high optical power to penetrate the clear or translucent container, yet remains very sensitive to the presence of water which absorbs the 1450 nm light. In the event that the sensor is burning though both the container and the liquid contents, the system gain should be reduced with apertures, increased separation distance, or mis-alignment of the sensors.

Features
  • Special emitter/receiver technology tuned to an absorption band of water makes the sensor pair sensitive to the presence of water and water based liquids.
  • Extremely high excess gain makes the sensors powerful enough to burn through many types of plastic and glass containers but still sensitive to the presence of liquid inside the container.
  • Built in electronic crosstalk avoidance allows multiple sensor pairs to be used in close proximity.
  • Rugged IP67 housing for harsh environments with epoxy encapsulated electronics.
  • Washdown rated PW12 – tested with 1200 psi spray.
  • Compact housing, mounting versatility — 30 mm threaded barrel- or side-mount
  • Models available with 2 m or 9 m (6.5' or 30') cable, or 150 mm (6") pigtail with quick-disconnect fitting
  • Apertures included with the sensor to adjust sensor gain and shape the effective beam
