Red Lion Controls Graphite HMIs Receive Global ATEX and IECEx Approvals

Red Lion Controls, the global experts in communication, monitoring and control for industrial automation and networking, today announced that its rugged Graphite® Human Machine Interface (HMI) operator panels have been certified to operate in global ATEX zone 2/22 and IECEx zone 2 environments. Following Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Class I, Division 2 Listed status received last year, these approvals certify that Graphite HMIs are safe for use with industrial control equipment in potentially explosive, hazardous locations around the world.

Red Lion’s touchscreen Graphite HMIs are now able to provide organizations with powerful monitoring and control capabilities regardless of operating environment, even locations subject to potentially explosive atmospheres that may result from gas, vapor, mist and/or dust. This enables industrial customers in markets such as oil and gas, flour and grain, mining, chemical, painting and metal processing to benefit from rugged aluminum construction, wider operating temperatures and high shock/vibration tolerances.

“The addition of ATEX and IECEx certifications to Red Lion’s Graphite HMIs enable us to better serve additional markets that require rugged, sunlight-visible operator panels for use in hazardous locations,” said Jeff Thornton, director of product management at Red Lion Controls. “Plug-and-play expandability via modular PID control, I/O and communications modules combined with Crimson software eases configuration to simplify integration regardless of environment.”

From factories to extreme locations, Graphite HMIs enable customers to connect, monitor and control processes across a broad range of industries to meet varying industrial automation requirements. Since its launch in July of 2013, Red Lion’s Graphite platform has received numerous global accolades, including Automation World’s “First Team Supplier, HMI Hardware” award, the “Industrial Control Award” from Plant Engineering China and “Best Product of the Year” from Control Engineering China.

Banner Engineering PROFINET iVu Image Sensors

Banner Engineering's iVu 2015R1 software update introduces the PROFINET communication protocol to simplify communications with some of the most commonly used industrial controllers in factory automation.

Adding this industrial protocol to the Ethernet-enabled Gen2 iVu Plus TG and iVu Plus BCR sensors provides simple and robust communication channels to control and monitor iVu Plus sensors from any controller that supports PROFINET. This new functionality matches the capabilities available for EtherNet/IP, Modbus/TCP or PCCC.

Communicating over PROFINET, a PLC or HMI can remotely issue a product change, update the barcode compare string or trigger an iVu Plus sensor. Similarly, an HMI could display inspection results for operators to view, or a PLC could make informed production decisions based upon data provided by the iVu Plus sensor. The iVu also offers diagnostic notifications for product change errors, teach errors, system errors and more. These diagnostic capabilities make set up easier and allows for quick diagnosis of faults anywhere on the network, minimizing downtime.

Turck QR24 Sensor for Mobile Equipment

TURCK released a new QR24 rotary inductive sensor to expand programmability for industrial applications and improve rotary position feedback for the mobile equipment market. The QR24 for mobile equipment features a low operating voltage of 8-30 VDC with 0.5 – 4.5 V output. This technology is immune to vibrations and interference, ensuring accuracy and longevity to avoid replacement downtime and comes in an IP68/IP69K rated housing to protect against moisture and dust in demanding environments.

All QR24 sensors use resistance inductive capacitance (RLC) measuring technology to process and communicate position. Each sensor is manufactured with printed emitter and receiver coil systems fully potted within the housing. When the emitter coils are activated with a high-frequency AC field, they produce an inductive RLC circuit with the positioning element. The position of that element is processed based on the induced signal to the receiver coils in the sensors.

For mobile equipment and industrial applications, this wear-free technology is ideal when applied directly to the shaft of a motor to provide superior accuracy for position feedback. In conjunction with RLC technology, TURCK’s QR24 rotary inductive sensors provide high-resolution and 16-bit noiseless operation. The double resonator system offers increased distance capability and highend signal processing with a multicore microprocessor for enhanced speed.

Red Lion Controls Sixnet Industrial Cellular RTUs

Red Lion Controls, the global experts in communication, monitoring and control for industrial automation and networking, today announced its Sixnet® series RAM® industrial cellular RTUs now feature a web-based user-configurable event engine that can trigger I/O and relays or send SMS text messages based on real-time operational data. With connectivity options such as I/O, serial, Ethernet and optional Wi-Fi, RAM RTUs easily integrate with existing equipment to provide a remote monitoring M2M solution that performs reliable local control and alerts personnel of critical events.

With an intuitive web-based, menu-driven interface that requires no knowledge of programming languages, the powerful RAM event engine can quickly be configured to trigger actions when pre-defined alarm values are met. For example, if a tank level is too high or a pressure level is out of range, the RAM event engine will not only cycle a relay to stop a pump or close a valve, but can also send text message notifications to alert when actions should be taken. This function helps automation engineers, technicians, production managers and network operators make critical decisions.

“With the addition of the web-based event engine, the RAM cellular RTU becomes an all-in-one platform for remote monitoring and control,” said Paul Bunnell, product manager at Red Lion Controls. “This versatile solution takes the complexity out of configuring events and notification without requiring additional equipment.”

By providing data visibility, control and real-time notifications on field-deployed equipment and processes, the RAM platform enables vertical markets such as oil and gas, utilities, water/wastewater and alternative energy to take advantage of the benefits associated with the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). With hardened metal enclosures, a wide operating temperature range and industry certifications to ensure safe operation in hazardous locations, RAM cellular RTUs securely monitor remote devices via 4G LTE cellular communications to enable reliable operation in critical environments.

Turck extremelife-60 Cables

To answer the need for cables that can withstand the harshest cold weather environments imaginable; TURCK announces a new platform cable offering, extremelife-60. Designed with a specially engineered proprietary cable jacket material, these cables remain flexible enough to work with even at -40°C and carry UL -60°C cold bend and UL/ CSA -40°C cold impact listings as well as an FT4 flame rating. No other cable on the market combines these achievements in a single cable solution; this makes the extremelife-60 an unrivaled solution for extreme cold weather applications even in harsh environments. The extremelife-60 cables are available in a wide variety of AWG sizes, constructions, conductor counts, and cable jacket colors.

“There are many cold weather applications that can be challenging to find the right cable solution. There are cables that do perform well in the cold, but often don’t come with any approvals. With the help of our internal cable design team, we’ve come up with a solution that has an FT4 flame rating, UV resistance, oil resistance, and the proper approvals for use in hazardous locations, all while being able to be used in really cold and harsh environments.” Said Jay Bartsias, senior product manager for TURCK. “All of these attributes in one cable is something that has never really been done before. Our customers can feel confident that they are getting the best cable solution for their most difficult applications.”

In addition to its cold bend, cold impact and flame ratings the extremelife-60 cables also have ITC and PLTC approval from UL, as well as CIC approval from CSA which makes these cables code compliant for NEC and CEC Class 1 Division 2 hazardous location applications. Furthermore, TURCK’s extremelife-60 cables carry Oil Res I and Oil Res II approvals and are UL listed for exposed run (ER) and direct burial. This means the cables pass the exact crush and impact tests as metal clad cable; but without metal cladding. With the rugged construction, combination of approvals, and flexible cable jacket that will not break or crack even when pulled or bent in extreme cold these cables are a logical fit for cold weather oil and gas installations where flexibility in the cold along with a UL/CSA listed and hazardous location rated jacket has always been a challenge. All of these attributes combine to bring a cable that will result in less downtime and more cost savings in a fully compliant offering.
