Phoenix Contact Inline Modular Intrinsically Safe I/O

Potentially explosive areas place special requirements on distributed I/O systems, and Phoenix Contact's Inline modular product family is excited for the addition of EX-IS I/O for such applications.  EX-IS I/O can be installed directly in potentially explosive Zone 2 environments and wired to sensors and actuators in the highly explosive Zone 1 and 0 environments.

Traditionally, you run the I/O signals out of the hazardous locations and wire them directly to the PLC. This method has the potential to create long parallel wiring runs that could become bulky, expensive and time consuming to install.  Removing the I/O from the PLC and distributing it closer to sensors directly in the Zone 2 environment can save time and money by simply replacing those wires with a single Ethernet or serial communications cable.

The construction of in Inline modular intrinsically safe I/O station consists of the following three pieces:

  1. Bus Coupler - Handles the communications of I/O signals back to the PLC.  Interface modules are available from the Inline modular product family and support all major serial and Ethernet protocols.
  2. Power Module - Provides fully isolated power for the EX-IS I/O modules.  An IS station can only contain one PWR module, and this module can supply power for up to 10 modules, or 1A of total current draw.  If this limit is reached, a second I/O station will need to be created.
  3. IS I/O Modules - They provide the connection to the I/O signals in Zone 1 and 0.  This offering consists of three variations for digital, analog, and temperature signals.  Each module can be individually configured as inputs or outputs with additional configurations for signal type and filtering.  This type of flexibility allows you to quickly adapt via software to the changing needs of your applications.

Pepperl+Fuchs F190 UHF RFID Reader

Pepperl+Fuchs introduces the new compact F190 UHF Read/Write Head. The F190 features a robust sealed metal housing and a compact footprint for reliable operation in adverse environmental conditions and simple installation even in tight spaces. Because several products in a container can be detected at the same time using multi-tag reading, the F190 simultaneously simplifies processes and reduces processing time. The F190 easily integrates into existing IDENTControl systems, enabling users to connect to standard protocols such as Ethernet/IP, PROFINET, TCP/IP and EtherCAT. Three reader versions are available to cover worldwide operation.

“In the field of intralogistics, efficiency is the number one priority. Goods have to be distributed quickly and reliably, and forwarded to their intended destination without any allocation errors. The new generation of F190 UHF read/write head opens up a wealth of opportunities for the logistics sector and the automotive industry, for example,” says Tim Cicerchi, Product Marketing Manager.

Particularly cost-efficient UHF-labels are directly attached to the products. When these UHF labels move into the read field of the F190, the label information is transmitted to the read head and then to the IDENTControl interface. Where previously the data was transmitted for each tag individually, the F190 transmits data in bundles. This enables information from up to 40 tags to be transmitted to the read head in a single step.

The F190 UHF RFID reader boasts a typical read range of 0.2 up to 1.5 meters. It also accommodates linear vertical, linear horizontal or circular polarization. The advantage of circular polarization is that a tag can be read in any orientation, while linear polarization provides more power in a known tag orientation. The unit connects to the controller with a standard industrial M12 connector. The read head can be connected 100 m away if required. Additionally, an innovative power-sweep mode lets users set a predetermined number of tags to be read; the power is then slowly ramped up until all the tags are read and the reader is then shut off until the next read cycle.

No middleware is required - so the F190 communicates directly with PLC control systems from Allen Bradley, Siemens and many others. Even though no extra software is required, a free demo program, RFIDControl, can be used to setup and test the system.

Pepperl+Fuchs is a world leader in the design, manufacture and application of high quality factory and process automation products and services. Pepperl+Fuchs pioneered the development of proximity sensors 50 years ago, and has set the standard for innovation and quality ever since.

Littelfuse SB6100 Industrial Shock-Block GFCI

The Industrial Shock-Block (ISB) from Littelfuse is a personnel protection device designed to meet the new requirements for special-purpose ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) defined by UL 943C.  ISB is the first and only permanently connected Class C and Class D GFCI on the market.  Class C GFCIs are introduced to be used on systems where the line-to-line voltage is 480V or less with a trip level of 20mA, while Class D GFCI is intended to be used on 600V systems.  These improvements to the standard Class A GFCI (6mA trip level used on 240V or less systems) were made to allow the use of GFCIs in industrial facilities.

ISB is also available with adjustable protection settings as an equipment ground-fault protective device (EGFPD).  The EGFPD models can be set to trip at 6, 10, 20 or 30mA.  This offers more flexibility, since GFCI devices are not allowed to have an adjustable trip level.

ISB (GFCI & EGFPD) is available for voltages from 208 to 600V, with a maximum full load current of 100A, and a built-in over current protection supplied by Littelfuse Class T fuses.  The load can be single-phase (line-to-line) or 3-phase, however, it cannot have a neutral.  The power system can either be solidly-grounded or high-resistance grounded.

Two options for enclosures are available: UL-recognized open-chassis models are available for installation in existing electrical enclosures and UL-listed enclosed models include a NEMA 4X enclosure for stand-alone installations.

The ISB also monitors the ground wire (load-ground) connection between the ISB and load.  This is a required feature for GFCI devices and is optional for EGFPD devices.  If the connection is broken, the ISB will provide an alarm by changing the state of the alarm contacts.  This monitoring circuit includes an extra wire (pilot wire) between the ISB and load (since the monitoring current is low, only a small wire is required).  At the load, the pilot wire is connected to a termination device.  The other end of the termination devices is connected to the load ground (typically the enclosure).

Turck QR24 Contactless Rotary Position Sensors

TURCK expands their QR24 rotary position sensor line with the addition of incremental and analog outputs. Designed from the company’s rotary inductive sensor technology, the QR24 provides contactless position detection and wear-free performance in a variety of industrial applications ranging from solar energy plants and harvesters to crane vehicles and AGVs. These additional output types allow for more precise and configurable data collection via IO Link or EasyTeach.

Rotary feedback is critical in nearly every installation, and most rely on their mechanical bearings to provide proper tolerance and position of the internal system. After time, this results in mechanical wear, vibrations, potential leaks and requires spring elements. The QR24 provides superior performance without the need for contact or bearings, allowing it to successfully execute the same functions. This extension provides many of the same output types as an encoder or potentiometer while eliminating wear and extending sensor longevity.

“Rotary feedback applications are becoming more diverse,” said Marty Cwach, Product Manager, TURCK. “Responding to these requirements led TURCK to incorporate more and varying output types to the already robust line of rotary feedback devices. TURCK’s QR24 line extension incorporates these new requirements and meets or exceeds the demands.”

The TURCK QR24 is part of the company’s industry-recognized Q-track family of sensors. Learn more about TURCK’s Q-track sensors on their YouTube Channel, TURCK TV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hF4gulc4ak0

The QR24’s multi-coil system provides high resolution, while ensuring 16-bit noiseless operation. The sensor also features a double resonator system, providing increased distance capabilities and high-end signal processing with a multi-core microprocessor for enhanced speed.

Along with advanced design features, the QR24 sensor features a fully potted and sealed IP69K/IP67-rated housing to protect against moisture and dust in demanding environments. It also offers flexible parameterization via IO Link or Easy Teach, allowing the sensor to easily adapt to specific application requirements.
